Shigeru Miyamoto Says Gamers No Longer Care About Console Specs

For years, Nintendo has taken a different approach to console design. Since the launch of the Nintendo Wii, the company’s systems have often featured less powerful hardware than competing platforms, yet they have continued to achieve remarkable commercial success.

According to legendary Nintendo game designer Shigeru Miyamoto, today’s players are increasingly embracing that philosophy as well.

In a recent interview with Famitsu, Miyamoto explained that consumers are no longer focused solely on having the most powerful gaming hardware. Instead, they value being able to purchase a game and immediately enjoy it on devices they already own.

He pointed to smartphones as a clear example, noting that almost everyone carries one today. However, Miyamoto believes Nintendo still offers a unique advantage by providing dedicated gaming experiences specifically designed around a single hardware architecture, resulting in more responsive controls and greater gameplay freedom than mobile devices.

Convenience Is Becoming the Biggest Selling Point

Miyamoto also shared his view that convenience is steadily becoming a more important factor than graphical performance or raw processing power.

Nintendo has embraced this philosophy through the hybrid design of the Nintendo Switch, allowing players to seamlessly move between handheld and TV play. That strategy has proven highly successful and continues to benefit the recently launched Nintendo Switch 2.

Graphics Alone No Longer Define Success

While many AAA developers continue pushing visual fidelity to new heights, Miyamoto suggested that stunning graphics alone are no longer the primary factor attracting players.

Games such as Fortnite, Roblox, and Five Nights at Freddy’s continue attracting enormous audiences despite being able to run smoothly on smartphones and lower-powered devices. Meanwhile, visually demanding titles like Hellblade and Death Stranding showcase cutting-edge graphics but appeal to a more specialized audience.

Rising Development Costs Could Reshape the Industry

Miyamoto’s comments also reflect broader trends across the gaming industry.

As development costs continue to rise alongside increasingly advanced graphics, both hardware and software become more expensive for consumers. This could gradually push high-end PC gaming and premium consoles toward a more niche market while encouraging more players to choose games that are easier to access across multiple devices.

Such a shift may eventually prompt major publishers to reconsider whether pursuing cutting-edge visuals remains the best long-term strategy or whether broader accessibility should become a higher priority.

For Nintendo, this changing landscape reinforces a philosophy the company has championed for more than a decade.

Miyamoto concluded by emphasizing that simplifying development processes remains an important goal for improving efficiency, adding that Nintendo has already built a strong development environment around that principle.
