OpenAI has officially launched GPT-5.1, marking a significant upgrade from the GPT-5 model released in August. This new version promises a smarter, more flexible, and entertaining ChatGPT experience, with rollout beginning for trial users this week.
Two Versions for Optimized Performance
GPT-5.1 comes in two specialized versions:
- GPT-5.1 Instant: Focuses on speed and warm, intelligent responses for everyday conversations.
- GPT-5.1 Thinking: Optimized for complex tasks, understanding queries faster while delivering thoughtful answers.
The system automatically selects the appropriate version based on the type of query, ensuring users receive the best results. Legacy GPT-5 models will remain available for three months to allow smooth transition and comparison.
Expanded ChatGPT Personalities
OpenAI has also introduced eight chat personality styles: Default, Professional, Friendly, Candid, Quirky, Efficient, Nerdy, and Cynical. A new feature allows select users to customize tone and style from the Settings menu.
Fidji Simo, OpenAI’s CEO of Applications, emphasized that with over 800 million ChatGPT users globally, it’s no longer necessary for everyone to use the same model. This update underscores OpenAI’s push for personalized and flexible AI experiences.
Context and Industry Response
GPT-5.1 arrives amid criticism that GPT-5 had not evolved enough, with users calling for GPT-4o’s return. OpenAI responded to these demands, while Microsoft, a key partner, has increasingly adopted Anthropic models for Copilot Researcher and Office Agent services. The release of GPT-5.1 aims to restore confidence and position ChatGPT as a conversationally adept, user-friendly assistant.
