Resident Evil Requiem Japan Censorship Details Revealed

Players have begun criticizing Resident Evil Requiem Japan censorship after screenshots from the Japanese release surfaced online. Many fans believe the censorship method used in the local version significantly reduced the atmosphere of the game.
Japanese versions of Resident Evil traditionally include censorship
Longtime fans already know that Resident Evil titles released in Japan often contain censorship adjustments. These changes usually reduce graphic violence, such as intense gore or dismemberment.
Capcom typically releases two versions of the game in Japan. The standard edition applies stronger censorship so younger audiences can access it. Meanwhile, the Z rating version removes most restrictions and is intended for adult players.

However, even Z rated releases often include minor adjustments to comply with Japan’s content guidelines.
Players say the new censorship method feels excessive
The controversy began when a Reddit user named iStretchyDisc shared screenshots from the Japanese version of the game. Despite carrying the highest Z rating classification, several scenes still appeared heavily censored.
According to players, the censorship approach used in Resident Evil Requiem looks unusually blunt. Instead of adjusting animations or modifying scenes, the game simply covers certain graphic areas with large black overlays.
Many players believe this technique breaks immersion because it becomes visually obvious during gameplay.

Several scenes reportedly show heavy visual blocking
Fans pointed out multiple moments where the censorship becomes noticeable.
One example occurs during Leon’s opening encounter with Gideon in Wrenwood. A victim bitten by a zombie appears with parts of the face blacked out, including the missing nose detail.
Another moment involves a puzzle where Grace must place simulated organs into a zombie body. In the Japanese version, the exposed interior textures appear replaced with a dark gray block.
Players also highlighted a large female monster encounter early in the story. In that scene, major parts of the creature’s body appear entirely covered in black, including the eyes, making the model look partially erased.
Fans compare the censorship to older Resident Evil games
Many players argued that previous Resident Evil titles handled censorship more carefully. Earlier games often replaced animations, adjusted camera angles, or altered puzzle designs so the atmosphere remained intact.
For example, past Japanese releases sometimes modified death animations instead of covering scenes. Other titles redesigned puzzles to avoid graphic imagery while still fitting the game world.
Because of this history, fans were surprised to see Resident Evil Requiem rely on a simpler black overlay method. Some players have already begun questioning whether development constraints or last minute adjustments caused the change.
