Ubisoft Assassin’s Creed Dream Job Turned Into Indie Game Developer Journey

Darenn Keller, a former game designer at Ubisoft, worked on high-profile titles such as Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and Mirage. However, despite landing his dream job with a prestigious AAA company, Keller realized that the reality of the job did not align with his expectations. He made the bold decision to leave Ubisoft and pursue a career in indie game development. This decision led him to create Dawnfolk, a city-building game that, while not widely known, has sold over 26,000 copies and garnered mostly positive reviews on Steam, even one year after release.
Keller shared his experience on Reddit, revealing that working on Assassin’s Creed was not as fulfilling as he had imagined. “It wasn’t what I thought it would be, and I started feeling unhappy,” he posted. Despite his dream of contributing to the iconic Assassin’s Creed franchise, the reality of working on such large-scale projects was not as rewarding.
In an interview with GamesRadar, Keller further explained how his transition from working at Ubisoft to becoming an indie developer allowed him to find happiness. “The thing that kept me there was that I really loved the team when I was working in the office,” he said. However, as the shift to remote work during the COVID-19 pandemic made collaboration more difficult, Keller began to feel the weight of his job.
Now, as the sole creator behind Dawnfolk, Keller enjoys the freedom of working on his own terms, despite the challenges that come with being an indie developer. The game has continued to generate steady income, allowing Keller to focus on his passion for indie game development.
