Captain Tsubasa II: World Fighters is bringing anime football back with faster action, easier controls, and a bigger stage for youth national teams to battle for the top spot.
Based on an early preview build, the sequel feels like a smoother and more accessible evolution of Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions, while still keeping the dramatic football energy that makes the series stand apart from traditional sports games.
A new generation of anime football action
The arrival of Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions in 2020 gave football fans something different. Instead of chasing pure realism, it mixed sports gameplay with anime-style storytelling, flashy shots, and easy-to-understand action.
Captain Tsubasa II: World Fighters builds on that idea by adapting a larger youth national team arc, adding more global teams, and upgrading the experience for modern platforms.
This is also the series’ first return on newer hardware after several years, with the game developed under close supervision from Yoichi Takahashi, the original creator of Captain Tsubasa.
Story mode brings more character drama
The preview build included three main parts, with story mode standing out as one of the most interesting sections.
The selected story scenario featured Tsubasa’s team facing a regional rival squad. Before the match, players could see character conversations in the locker room, along with dialogue choices that helped reveal more about the relationships between players.
The cutscenes in the preview were mostly built around character models speaking in place, but the voice acting helped give the scenes more energy. The performances follow the anime style closely, which should make the story mode more enjoyable for fans of the source material.
The preview also showed that teams such as China and Saudi Arabia are part of the wider lineup, giving fans more matchups to look forward to.
Faster arcade-style gameplay
The gameplay still feels familiar for players who experienced Rise of New Champions, but the sequel appears to be more responsive.
Once a match begins, control automatically shifts to the player nearest to the ball. Character movement feels light, fast, and arcade-like, allowing players to respond quickly when running, passing, or attacking.
One of the biggest improvements is the simplified action system. Many actions can now be performed through a single button depending on the situation, making the game feel more convenient and easier to pick up.
Tackling and defensive pressure are still important, especially when trying to interrupt opponents or create openings to steal the ball.
Sub-missions and extra scenarios
Story mode also includes smaller missions that can unlock new scenarios.
These additional scenes appear to branch away from the main story and give players more chances to learn about the characters. This could make story progression feel more rewarding, especially for fans who want more than just match after match.
The game also includes Free Practice, where players can choose home and away teams to improve their skills, and Offline Match, which allows free play against another local player or the CPU.
The menu structure in the preview felt direct and easy to understand, giving the game a classic sports-game feel where players can quickly jump into the action without dealing with too many screens.
Player Edit returns
The Customize mode also returns through Player Edit.
This lets players create an avatar-style character known as a new star. Players can choose details such as face and hairstyle, though the preview suggests the options may not be extremely wide.
Even so, the system helps players feel more connected to the world of Captain Tsubasa. It also raises interest in how these custom characters may be used in the final version’s story or team content.
