Castlevania Belmont’s Curse Team Explains Why Rose Became the Lead

Konami has shared new details about the creative decision behind Castlevania Belmont’s Curse, explaining why the upcoming action platformer places Rose, the daughter of Trevor Belmont, at the center of its story.

Story Themes Led to Rose’s Selection

According to information published by Famitsu and reported by Go Nintendo, the development team spent considerable time deciding who would lead the new adventure.

Rather than choosing a protagonist first, the developers reportedly built the game’s setting and storyline before realizing that Rose was the character who best fit the narrative. As Trevor Belmont’s daughter, Rose carries the family’s legendary bloodline while also dealing with the loss of her mother, an event that plays a significant role in the story.

The team explained that the game explores the curse passed down through generations while emphasizing the emotional relationship between a mother and daughter. These themes ultimately convinced the developers that a female protagonist was the best choice for the project.

A Rare Solo Female Lead For The Series

Although female playable characters have appeared throughout the Castlevania franchise, solo female protagonists have been relatively uncommon.

Previous examples include Shanoa from Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia and Sonia Belmont from Castlevania Legends. Other entries, such as Portrait of Ruin, featured male and female partners sharing the spotlight, while several games offered female characters only as unlockable options.

About Castlevania Belmont’s Curse

Set 23 years after the events of Dracula’s Curse, Castlevania Belmont’s Curse takes players to Paris in 1499 after demonic forces emerge from the shadows and overrun the city.

Players will explore a vast interconnected world, uncover hidden paths, battle terrifying monsters, and wield the legendary Vampire Killer whip as Rose fights to protect humanity. The game is also being developed with support from the team behind Dead Cells, adding further excitement for longtime Metroidvania fans.
