League of Legends ARAM Mayhem Gets Wilder Soon

League of Legends is preparing a new update that should excite both chaotic ARAM fans and players who miss full-team ranked competition.

Riot Games has revealed new details for ARAM: Mayhem in Season 2 Act 2 Patch 26.12, bringing a stronger focus on Augments that make each champion feel more unique. At the same time, the team is preparing to test the return of Ranked 5s, giving groups of 5 players another way to compete together on Summoner’s Rift.

Together, these updates show how League of Legends continues to experiment with different ways to keep the game fresh for both casual and competitive players.

ARAM: Mayhem gets more chaotic in Patch 26.12

After receiving positive feedback from players, Riot Games is moving forward with more changes for ARAM: Mayhem.

In the next update, the previous Trait system will start being removed. This change is meant to make room for new systems that create more variety between matches and allow players to build around their champions more freely.

According to the development team, the old Trait system was originally created to add more depth to Augment choices and help players discover fun combinations. However, after the mode went live, the team found that some builds and experiences became too repetitive.

There was also another issue. Some players started choosing Augments mainly because of Trait effects instead of picking options that truly strengthened the champion they were playing.

Because of this, ARAM: Mayhem in Patch 26.12 will return to the core purpose of the mode: making each Augment feel fun, powerful, and clearly connected to a champion’s playstyle.

Skill Augments change how champions play

One of the biggest additions in the update is the arrival of Skill Augments.

These new Augments can change or upgrade specific champion skills in major ways. Instead of only adding small bonus effects, Skill Augments are designed to create a clearly different gameplay experience.

One example is Multishot, which fires extra magic projectiles at up to 2 enemies in front of the player whenever they use an ability. When combined with Lux’s Q, this could make Light Binding threaten more enemies than usual.

Another example is Chain Reaction. This Augment adds extra effects when players knock enemies into the air. If the launched enemy collides with another enemy champion, both targets are knocked up and damaged. If the target hits a wall, they stay airborne longer and take more damage.

These examples show the direction Riot wants for Mayhem. The mode should feel champion-focused, unpredictable, and full of surprising moments from characters players already know.

Quest Augments add new goals during matches

Riot Games is also adding more Quest Augments to the mode.

The team said players enjoyed Augments that gave them missions and rewards during the match, such as Quest: Steel Your Heart and Quest: Urf’s Champion. Because of that, more quest-style options are being introduced.

One new example is Quest: Tooth Fairy. This Augment lets players collect “teeth” from enemies after dealing high damage within a short period. The teeth collected will grant more critical strike stats and magic penetration.

Another example is Quest: Support Main, made for players who enjoy healing and shielding teammates. After completing the mission by healing or shielding allies, the player can grant extra health regeneration to teammates based on the value of healing and shielding given.

The development team also emphasized that the goal of Mayhem is not strict balance that removes all wild moments. Instead, the goal is to create a fun and fresh space where memorable chaos can happen.

At the same time, Riot still wants basic fairness. Every champion should have a strong build to chase, but no build should guarantee victory every time.

Ranked 5s returns as an experiment

The second major update is the experimental return of Ranked 5s.

Riot Games said competitive League of Legends is at its best when 5 players work together toward the same goal. Communication, planning, adaptation, and shared team moments are all part of what makes full-team League exciting.

Ranked 5s will be a Summoner’s Rift queue for complete groups of 5 players. Each player will still have their own rank, but the new version includes several changes from the older system to better match how players group up today.

Players can queue with different friend groups

One major change is that players will not be locked into the same fixed team every time.

In the new version of Ranked 5s, players can queue with any group of friends. This should make it easier to organize matches and reduce the old problem where teams struggled because not everyone could play consistently.

Players can also queue together without rank restrictions. Riot Games said the goal of this queue is to give friends space to play together even if their skill levels are different.

To support this, the system will use several balancing mechanisms to create matches that are as close and enjoyable as possible.

SEA queue times focus on weekend play

To improve matchmaking quality and reduce queue times, Ranked 5s will only be available during specific weekend time windows.

For Southeast Asia, the mode will be open from 9:00 PM to 1:00 AM SGT.

This limited schedule is designed to gather interested players into the queue at the same time. With more teams entering together, the system should have a better chance of creating fair matches with reasonable waiting times.

Tournament Draft adds deeper team strategy

The new Ranked 5s will use Tournament Draft instead of the normal ranked draft system.

This format follows a 3 bans, 3 picks, 2 bans, 2 picks structure. The goal is to encourage deeper team planning before the match even begins.

Teams can use the draft phase to protect counter picks, adjust strategy, react to the enemy lineup, and plan around the champions revealed during selection.

This should make Ranked 5s feel closer to organized team competition instead of simply being another ranked queue.

Ranked 5s rewards confirmed

Riot Games will also offer rewards to encourage players to try the mode.

All participants will receive an Icon, regardless of rank. Players who climb to Gold or higher can also earn a special banner that reflects their highest rank.

The team stressed that this version of Ranked 5s is still experimental. Systems may change based on player feedback in the future.

Players are encouraged to gather their teams, enter the queue, and share feedback to help improve the mode.

League of Legends keeps testing new ways to play

Both updates show Riot Games’ continued effort to offer different experiences for different kinds of players.

For players who enjoy wild, creative, and unpredictable matches, ARAM: Mayhem is becoming more focused on champion identity and memorable Augment combinations.

For players who want serious team competition with friends, Ranked 5s offers a chance to experience full-squad ranked play again.

Whether players want chaos or coordination, this update gives the community more reasons to return.

This is a strong direction for League of Legends because it serves 2 very different player moods. ARAM: Mayhem gives players the ridiculous, overpowered, and creative moments that make casual modes memorable. Meanwhile, Ranked 5s brings back something many competitive players missed: the feeling of winning and losing as a complete team. The SEA weekend time window is also a smart move because it may improve matchmaking quality by gathering teams at the same time. If Riot handles feedback well, this experiment could become a meaningful addition for players who want real team-based competition again.
