Apple is reportedly preparing to bring OLED display technology to the iPad Air, with a launch window targeted for early 2027. According to a report from ET News, Samsung Display is set to begin production of OLED panels by late 2026 to meet Apple’s timeline.
This move follows the recent release of the iPad Air with M4 chip in March 2026, which still uses the traditional Liquid Retina LCD display.
A Major Leap in Display Technology
The current iPad Air has some clear limitations, including
- A 60Hz refresh rate
- No ProMotion 120Hz support
- Less accurate blacks compared to OLED
Switching to OLED would significantly improve
- True black levels
- More vibrant and accurate colors
- Wider viewing angles
- Better power efficiency
This upgrade would greatly enhance both entertainment and creative workflows
Not Quite the Same as iPad Pro
Despite the upgrade, the iPad Air will not use the same OLED technology as the Pro models. Reports suggest it will feature
- Single-stack LTPS OLED
instead of
- Two-stack LTPO OLED used in iPad Pro
This means
- Lower brightness compared to Pro
- No ProMotion 120Hz
- Slightly less advanced performance overall
Still, it represents a major improvement for the Air lineup
More iPads May Follow
The report also hints that iPad mini could transition to OLED around the same period
If true, only the
- entry-level iPad
would remain on LCD, signaling Apple’s shift toward OLED as the new standard
Pricing Could Increase Slightly
Current pricing for iPad Air starts at
- 599 USD for the 11-inch model
- 799 USD for the 13-inch model
With OLED adoption, prices may rise slightly, though still expected to remain competitive
Should You Wait?
If you are not in a hurry, waiting for the 2027 model could be worth it
OLED will significantly improve
- Cinematic viewing
- Color-accurate editing
Apple is clearly pushing toward a future where OLED becomes standard across its tablet lineup, and iPad Air looks like the next step
