Windows 11 Update Speeds Up File Explorer and Adds New Xbox Mode

Microsoft Speeds Up File Explorer on Windows 11 with New Update

Microsoft is pushing forward with improvements to Windows 11, focusing on delivering a smoother and faster user experience. The latest update, currently being tested by Windows Insider users, introduces performance upgrades to File Explorer, one of the most frequently used features in the operating system.

While technical details remain limited, early reports suggest noticeable improvements in responsiveness and loading speed.

Faster Launch with Background Preloading

The main upgrade appears to come from a preloading system, which allows File Explorer to partially load in the background. This means when users open it, the window appears almost instantly.

This approach is similar to the Startup Boost feature introduced in Microsoft Office, where certain processes are prepared in advance during system login.

For users who prefer minimal background activity, Microsoft is also providing the option to disable this feature through Folder Options.

Fixes for Dark Mode and Stability Improvements

Beyond speed, Microsoft is addressing long-standing usability issues. One of the most notable fixes targets the white flash problem that occurs when opening File Explorer or switching tabs in Dark Mode.

The update significantly reduces this issue, offering a more comfortable experience, especially in low-light environments.

In addition, improvements to the explorer.exe process aim to enhance system stability. The system now handles closing processes more efficiently, reducing the chances of freezing or lingering background tasks.

New Xbox Mode Brings Console-Like Gaming Experience

Alongside productivity improvements, Microsoft is introducing a new feature aimed at gamers: Xbox Mode.

This mode provides a fullscreen, distraction-free interface, designed for players who want a more immersive experience when gaming on PC.

Key highlights include:

  • A clean fullscreen interface optimized for controllers
  • Reduced background distractions
  • Easy access through Xbox app, Game Bar, or shortcut (Win + F11)

The feature is especially useful for players who prefer a console-like setup while gaming on Windows.

Rolling Out Through Insider Program

These updates are currently available to users in the Release Preview channel, running Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2.

If feedback remains positive, the features are expected to roll out to the general public in a future update.

A Step Toward a More Modern Windows Experience

With improvements in both productivity and gaming, Microsoft is continuing to refine Windows 11 into a more versatile and responsive platform.

The combination of faster system performance and dedicated gaming features shows a clear focus on adapting to modern user needs, whether for work or play.
