Microsoft Raises Surface Prices by Up to $500 Amid Global Memory Shortage
Microsoft has officially increased prices across its entire Surface lineup, delivering a tough blow to anyone planning to buy a new Windows laptop. The company cited a global RAM shortage as the main reason behind the move, with production costs rising sharply due to intense demand from AI infrastructure worldwide.
The new pricing is already reflected on Microsoft’s online store, and retailers are expected to follow soon.
Prices Climb Across the Entire Surface Lineup
According to reports, every Surface model has seen at least a $100 increase compared to 2025 pricing. However, some configurations have jumped significantly higher, with increases reaching up to $500 when compared to their original launch prices.
One of the clearest examples is the 13-inch Surface Pro. Originally priced at $999 in 2024, it now starts at $1,499 in 2026. That’s a steep jump that highlights how dramatically costs have shifted in just a couple of years.
As a result, there are currently no Surface devices priced below $1,000, marking a major shift in Microsoft’s pricing strategy.

For users aiming at top-tier performance, the price climb becomes even more noticeable. The highest-end 15-inch Surface Laptop configurations now reach up to $3,649, pushing them firmly into premium laptop territory.
The main driver behind this surge is the skyrocketing demand for memory components, especially from data centers powering AI systems. As companies race to build more powerful AI infrastructure, hardware supply has become increasingly strained.

Sony has already adjusted pricing and supply for products like the PS5, while devices like the Steam Deck have become harder to find due to limited components. Apple Responds With Budget Alternatives
Interestingly, Apple has also raised MacBook prices but is taking a different approach by introducing more affordable alternatives like the MacBook Neo. This move helps balance rising costs while still appealing to budget-conscious buyers.
In contrast, Microsoft has yet to introduce a clear low-cost option within the Surface lineup, which may put additional pressure on its position in the market.
