Dokkaebi World Reveals Korean Folklore Mobile MMORPG

Kakao Games has released a new teaser for Dokkaebi World, an upcoming mobile MMORPG developed by Supercat and previously known under the working title Project OQ.

The game presents a distinctive K-fantasy setting inspired by Korean folklore, traditional architecture, and supernatural beings. Its visual identity combines retro-style characters with three-dimensional environments to create a 2.5D world that stands apart from the medieval European settings commonly found in MMORPGs.

A K-Fantasy World Inspired by Korean Folklore

The official teaser introduces a dreamlike world centered around a massive sacred tree, with humans, dokkaebi, spirits, and other creatures living alongside one another.

Rather than presenting the setting only as a battlefield, the promotional artwork shows characters participating in festivals and everyday community life. This approach suggests that the game’s world will place considerable emphasis on culture, relationships, and shared spaces in addition to combat.

The opening sequence also draws inspiration from Munjado, a traditional Korean folk-art form that integrates symbolic illustrations into written characters. The game’s title artwork incorporates characters, monsters, scenery, and cultural motifs into a modern interpretation of this traditional visual style.

Joseon-Inspired Locations and Supernatural Creatures

The environments revealed so far feature architectural and cultural elements associated with historical Korea. These include tiled roofs, traditional fortress gates, thatched houses, pavilions, bamboo forests, and jangseung village guardian poles.

The game’s creature designs also move away from conventional Western fantasy races. Promotional material features beings inspired by Korean legends, including mace-wielding dokkaebi, fiery foxes, ghostly entities, and large mythical animals.

Costumes and character designs incorporate elements resembling hanbok ribbons, traditional robes, topknots, and historical accessories. These cultural references are reinterpreted through a stylized fantasy presentation rather than reproduced as strict historical designs.

A 2.5D Blend of Pixel Art and 3D Environments

Dokkaebi World is being developed with the Unity engine and uses a hybrid graphical format that combines two-dimensional pixel-art characters with three-dimensional environments.

Supercat is known for its retro-inspired visual style, and the studio is applying that experience to create environments with greater depth while retaining the recognizable appeal of classic sprite-based MMORPGs.

The contrast between detailed environmental backgrounds and compact pixel characters gives the game a visual identity that feels nostalgic without relying entirely on traditional two-dimensional presentation.

Previously revealed locations include the busy settlement of Tabaro, the bamboo forests of Gwisusa, and the ruined region of Gwitaek. Each area uses different architecture, atmosphere, and environmental details to communicate its place within the game’s folklore-inspired world.

Based on the Myeolgwi Sudojeon Universe

The game expands the universe of Myeolgwi Sudojeon, a Korean cultivation-fantasy web novel written by Yeon Woo-sol and produced by Redice.

The original story follows Ise, a boy who loses his family to supernatural creatures and later becomes the student of Mongryeon, a master associated with the dokkaebi. Its setting combines Korean folklore with Eastern fantasy concepts involving spirits, cultivation, and supernatural conflict.

Dokkaebi World takes place approximately 300 years before the events of the web novel. It explores a period when humans and dokkaebi had not yet developed complete trust and follows their efforts to establish a new era together.

Kakao Games worked with Yeon Woo-sol during the early stages of development to connect the game’s historical setting, characters, and dokkaebi mythology with the original story. Players will encounter the origins of figures and events that are remembered only as legends in the web novel.

Classless Progression and Skill Deck Building

Instead of forcing players to remain within rigid character classes, Dokkaebi World will offer a flexible progression system centered on collecting and combining skills.

Players will be able to construct personalized skill decks and adjust their combat options according to their preferred playstyle or the demands of a particular encounter. The system is intended to support experimentation without permanently restricting characters to conventional roles such as warrior, mage, or healer.

This structure could allow players to change their builds for different activities rather than creating a separate character whenever they want to try another combat approach.

The game will use real-time combat, requiring players to select appropriate abilities and skill combinations as battle conditions change.

Cooperative Clans, PvE, and Large-Scale PvP

Clan-based cooperation will form another major part of the game. Players will be able to participate in group activities built around working with other clan members against monsters and challenging encounters.

The developers have confirmed clan-centered cooperative PvE content alongside optional large-scale PvP activities. This structure is intended to provide content for both players who prefer cooperative progression and those interested in competitive battles.

Making large-scale PvP optional may also help prevent competitive systems from dominating the experience for players who are primarily interested in exploration, character growth, or cooperative content.

Pre-Registration and Release Schedule

Kakao Games plans to open pre-registration for Dokkaebi World in July 2026.

An online showcase is scheduled for August 2026, when the publisher intends to reveal further information about the game’s principal content, gameplay systems, and service plans. The mobile MMORPG is currently targeting an official release during the third quarter of 2026.

Specific regional availability and final launch platforms have not yet been fully detailed in the official announcements.

THIS IS our take

Dokkaebi World has the potential to distinguish itself through its commitment to Korean folklore and visual culture. Its combination of traditional motifs, 2.5D pixel-art presentation, classless progression, and skill deck building offers a clearer identity than another conventional medieval-fantasy MMORPG.

However, the long-term quality of the game will depend on how much freedom its progression system genuinely provides and whether its cooperative and competitive activities remain engaging beyond the initial launch period. The August showcase should provide a clearer picture of how these promising concepts will function in actual play.
