A recent report has stirred discussion within the PC hardware community after a customer claimed that ASUS canceled a fully paid order for its flagship ROG Astral RTX 5090 graphics card before raising the product’s retail price.
According to the report, Reddit user u/IndependentOk1031 successfully purchased the ASUS ROG Astral RTX 5090 through NVIDIA’s official online store for US$4,429. After taxes, the total payment came to nearly US$4,607.
However, the order was later canceled unexpectedly. Shortly afterward, the same graphics card reportedly reappeared with a new price tag of US$4,982. Including taxes, the total purchase price increased to roughly US$5,090—nearly US$500 more than the customer’s original payment.
Seeking an explanation, the customer contacted NVIDIA support. According to the response shared by the buyer, NVIDIA stated that ASUS had requested the cancellation because it could not fulfill the order at the original price. The customer also claimed NVIDIA attempted to coordinate with ASUS to honor the initial purchase, but the manufacturer ultimately declined to proceed with the sale at the original amount.
The incident has drawn additional attention because NVIDIA’s own GeForce RTX 5090 Founders Edition carries an official starting price of US$1,999. Premium partner cards from board manufacturers have been selling for substantially higher prices, a trend reportedly influenced by ongoing supply constraints and rising memory component costs.
The situation also mirrors a previous case involving GIGABYTE, where reports claimed GPU prices increased by as much as 40%, forcing some retailers in Japan to cancel existing customer orders before relisting products at higher prices.
For the affected buyer, the cancellation reportedly left only one option: placing a new order at the higher price if they still wanted to purchase the graphics card.
Neither ASUS nor NVIDIA has released an official public statement regarding the reported order cancellation beyond the information shared by the customer.
