Ace Combat 8 Interview Reveals Stunning Sky Tech

Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve Producer And Director Interview

Fans of fighter jet games had plenty to celebrate last year with the arrival of Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve.

This newest entry in the long-running Ace Combat series raises the excitement with upgraded gameplay and Unreal Engine 5 graphics.

It aims to deliver a next-generation flight action experience while keeping the series’ identity intact.

This Is Game Thailand recently had the chance to speak with Kazutoki Kono and Manubu Shimomoto, the producer and director of the game, through Bandai Namco Entertainment Asia.

The conversation covered the game’s aircraft design, sky technology, development priorities, and the team’s thoughts on future features.

Unreal Engine 5 And Aircraft Design

The first topic focused on Unreal Engine 5.

Because Ace Combat is known for featuring fighter jets inspired by real-world aircraft, the question was how the new engine helped the team design planes in the game.

The developers explained that Unreal Engine 5 brings many new technologies.

While they could not share every technical detail, they said the aircraft design process took a very long time.

Creating just one jet already requires a lot of work.

On top of that, the team also needed to create details such as dirt, marks, and other visual elements that appear on the aircraft.

Even with that workload, they felt the workflow went smoothly.

They also shared that they liked the results of the work.

A Deeper Kind Of Evolution

The team was also asked about the idea of “deep” change in Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve.

They explained that players will first notice how massive the sky feels.

The team uses special technology to create clouds that float across huge maps covering many square kilometers.

These clouds exist on different layers.

That means they are not only there to look beautiful.

They also affect gameplay.

Large cloud formations can block visibility. Some can become rain clouds. When the weather is clear, players can see sunlight reflecting more realistically.

The game also includes vapor trails from aircraft, appearing like long streaks of cloud behind the plane.

For the developers, this kind of “deep” change is closer to refinement than a simple evolution.

They want players to feel more dimension and detail in the world.

At the same time, long-time Ace Combat players should not feel alienated.

The team wants the game to remain the series they already love.

No Remaster Plans For Now

The interview also touched on the series anniversary.

Since 2025 marked an anniversary period for Ace Combat, the team was asked whether fans should expect extra surprises or if the focus remains on the new game.

The developers said they want to prioritize Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve.

If remasters or other projects appeared, the new game might lose some attention.

They understand that fans may feel excited about the possibility of additional projects.

However, the current goal is to fully focus on the game in front of them.

At the moment, there are no plans for a remaster or similar project.

Still, the team will continue listening to feedback from everyone and keep working to deliver fun experiences.

Voice Command Is An Interesting Idea

The next question focused on innovation.

Ace Combat often introduces new ideas to enhance the flight experience. For example, Ace Combat 7 included a VR mode.

The team was asked whether Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve might include immersion-focused features such as Voice Command.

The developers said there are currently no plans for it.

However, they also mentioned that they had once discussed something with the Xbox side in the past, although it did not move forward.

When hearing the question, they found the idea interesting.

The conversation ended with a light moment, as Shimomoto laughed at the suggestion.

The Core Of Ace Combat 8

The developers were also asked about the highest priority in developing Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve.

Their answer focused on the heart of the series.

The first priority is flying through 3D space.

The second is the blue sky.

These elements remain central to Ace Combat.

Players must enjoy controlling aircraft and fighting enemies in the sky.

In this entry, players will become an Ace Pilot.

They will sit behind the cockpit and see the situation ahead through a first-person perspective.

The team wants players to feel deeply immersed in the role of the character.

First-Person Scenes And Comfort

The interview also discussed the first-person camera experience.

Since the preview build allowed frequent switching between third-person and cockpit-style views, the team was asked how they designed first-person scenes without causing discomfort.

The developers explained that first-person presentation is mainly fixed during cutscenes.

These scenes help players feel the emotion of the main character, such as moments on a rescue ship during story sequences.

During actual gameplay, players can switch between third-person and first-person views.

That makes the camera style a player choice.

This approach helps keep story immersion strong while giving players freedom during combat.

About Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve

Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve is an action shooting game focused on fighter jet combat.

The game is developed by Bandai Namco Aces.

Its story follows Rex, a pilot from the FCU of Central Usea.

Central Usea is at war with the Republic of Sotoa.

Players take command as the leader of Joker Squadron and guide their team against invading forces.

The game allows players to choose their fighter jet, customize parts, and equip weapons based on their preferred playstyle.

It supports both a story campaign and online play.

Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve is scheduled to launch on October 2 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

A New Sky With A Familiar Soul

Based on the interview, Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve aims to evolve without abandoning what fans love.

The team is using Unreal Engine 5 to make aircraft, clouds, light, vapor, and sky environments more detailed.

However, the focus remains the same: flying, fighting, and feeling like an Ace Pilot.

The layered cloud system sounds especially important because it adds both beauty and gameplay impact.

Meanwhile, the first-person story scenes aim to bring players closer to the pilot’s emotions without forcing one camera style during combat.

For fans waiting for the next big step in the series, this interview makes the direction clear.

Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve wants to deliver a bigger, richer sky while still feeling unmistakably like Ace Combat.

Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve sounds like a smart evolution rather than a risky reinvention. The team clearly understands that the series lives and dies by its skies, aircraft, and ace pilot fantasy. Unreal Engine 5 may bring the shine, but the real win is keeping the soul of Ace Combat intact.
