Understanding a Perspective He Could Not Fully Experience
In an interview with PC Gamer, Al Yang openly addressed one of the biggest challenges.
He explained that, as a man, he could not fully understand how a female character would feel in certain situations.
He could not accurately decide:
- How she would react to fear
- How she would express pressure
- How she would interpret emotional conflict
Even with effort and research, he felt his perspective alone was not enough.
Female Development Team Played a Key Role
Because of this limitation, the development of Hinako took a different approach.
The team gathered ideas directly from female developers. These contributors came from diverse backgrounds.

- Married women
Each brought their own experiences and emotional insight.
This collaborative process helped shape Hinako into a more believable and grounded character.
A Character Built on Real Emotional Insight
By listening to voices that better reflected the character’s reality, the team was able to refine Hinako’s identity.
Al Yang believes this approach allowed the game to explore its themes more honestly.
He also suggested that Silent Hill f touches on ideas such as:
